In Italy due to the tradition you are supposed to eat lentils on New Year’s eve because the upcoming year will be prosperous. I don’t know if it works or not, but since I love them so much I usually have no problem honoring this tradition. Besides being really tasty, the lentils are also an excellent food for the body. Mineral, antioxidant, cholesterol lowering, and so on and so forth… In order to preserve all these amazing nutritional properties, you might take a few precautions. Make sure to cook them with cold water over low heat and use a fair amount of liquid in order to not waste rich broth minerals. Following these “tips” I’ve tried to respect the tradition but adding the special flavor of black tea and fresh orange. Let me take this occasion to wish you Happy New Year, see you in the 2015 ; )
Ingredients:
500 gr. of French lentils (dry) • black tea • 1 small onion, chopped • the juice + zest of 1 orange • 3 tablespoons of olive oil • salt and pepper
- Put the lentils in a large pot, cover with half black tea and half water, turn on the heat and cook slowly for about 25 minutes;
- In the meanwhile, in a saucepan, stir-fry the onion with the olive oil until tender;
- Drain the lentils and put them in the saucepan with the onion, cook 1-2 minutes, stirring, salt and pepper;
- Add the juice and the zest of the orange, keep cooking for 5-7 minutes;
- Let stand lentils for 20 minutes before eating.
- Mettez les lentilles dans une grande marmite, couvrez avec une moitié de thé noir et une moitié d’eau, allumez le feu et cuisez lentement environ 25 minutes ;
- Pendant l’attente, dans une casserole, faites blondir l’oignon jusqu’à ce qu’il soit tendre ;
- Égouttez les lentilles et mettez-les dans la casserole avec l’oignon, faites cuire 1-2 minutes en remuant, salez et poivrez ;
- Ajoutez le jus et le zeste d’orange, cuisez encore 5-7 minutes ;
Lenticchie nere (beluga) al té nero e arancia
Ingredienti:
- Mettete le lenticchie in una casseruola capiente, copritele a metà con del tè nero e per l’altra metà d’acqua, accendete il fuoco e cuocete lentamente per circa 25 minuti;
- Durante l’attesa in un tegame, imbiondite la cipolla con un po’ d’olio finché le cipolle non saranno tenere;
- Scolate le lenticchie e mettetele nel tegame con la cipolla, fate cuocere qualche minuto, mescolando, salete e pepate;
- Aggiungete il succo e la scorza dell’arancia, fate cuocere ancora 5-7 minuti;
Tu dai retta a me, provale! Un bacione grande e buon 2015!
Wonderful, love lentils, and such an unusual combination! Love your pot too 🙂
Thanks a lot Loretta, such a great comment! Happy New Year!
Buon 2015 Marghe, all’anno prossimo!
I love those lentils! We eat them with Frankfurters and Spätzle 🙂
Thanks a lot Ginger!
Also a German tradition! Love the tea in this recipe! I must try!
You see… we all need good luck! Happy New Year Sue, thanks for being here!
Oh same to you Margy!!!
Black tea and oranges – what an interesting addition to the lentils!
I know, weird but tasty! Happy New Year!
So interesting. Adding lentils to my New Year’s eve menu now as a result of reading this. And wishing you a joyful, prosperous, and healthy New Year!
Thanks a lot, I hope you will have a great New Year… even because of the lentils!
Bravissimi! Buon anno cara Giulia!
I must try these the next time I make lentils. And happy New Year to you Margherita!
How marvellous! Have never heard of lentils been cooked in tea. Must be so flavorful n aromatic Marghy.
